September 8, 2016, at 7:05 p.m. — United Launch Alliance's Atlas V launches OSIRIS-REx toward the distant asteroid Bennu from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The OSIRIS-REx probe successfully collected an asteroid sample from Bennu in October 2020, and will return that sample to Earth in September 2023 before beginning a new mission to a different asteroid under the new name “OSIRIS-APEX.”
